If you are expecting, you are probably excited to meet your bundle of joy. Before that day comes, you may find yourself wondering how to manage heat and travel during the busy summer months. Here are a few things to consider when you are pregnant during the hot summer months.

Did you know that pregnant women have a low tolerance for heat? There are safe pregnancy practices to manage the summer heat. There are also a few tips your physician may discuss regarding traveling or attending get-togethers.

  • Drink plenty of water – Pregnant women are at higher risk of dehydration and heat exhaustion which can increase the risk for preterm labor. Don’t stay under direct heat of the sun too long. Seek shade when possible and wearing breathable clothes may help to keep you cool as well.
  • Use insect repellent – Insect bites can be common during summer or when you are outside. Insects may carry diseases or viruses that could be harmful to you or your pregnancy. If you are bitten by an insect be sure to discuss this with your physician.
  • Manage strenuous activity – When you travel you’ll want to enjoy everything your destination has to offer. Be careful regarding the types of activities you participate in as some may not be appropriate for pregnancy if they are too strenuous. How do you determine whether something is strenuous? Often times keeping your heart rate within the mid-target range is appropriate. In some cases lifting over 25 lbs of weight is considered strenuous. Are you concerned about some of your activities? Ask your doctor and they will be able to address these concerns. Further, if you are close to your due date your physician may not recommend traveling.
  • Avoid alcoholic beverages – There is no known safe amount of alcohol use in pregnancy. The best way to ensure alcohol will not have an effect on your pregnancy is by refraining from use.
