Santa, Shopping, and Stress

online Christmas shopping for pregnant women

It was not long ago when you took a pregnancy test kit in the bathroom and eagerly waited for its result. You can even still remember how your heartbeat leaped several notches when the two red lines appeared. And this holiday season, you feel more festive because of the soon-to-be new addition to your family.

While you are still feeling the excitement from the news of your pregnancy, you also have to admit that the stress of the past Thanksgiving and, now, this holiday season, is taking a toll on you. Christmas is almost here, and you still haven’t gone holiday shopping!

Should you go holiday shopping while pregnant?

If possible, no. True that the holiday season is also when we get the excuse to splurge and pamper ourselves with holiday shopping, especially with all the discounts most stores offer. However, shopping during the holiday season can be stressful for pregnant women. Shopping with holiday sales may be exciting, but can also be stressful.

Your pregnancy is a gift in itself for your whole family. At this time, staying away from the crowded shopping areas may be helpful for your pregnancy. Your immune system is not as strong during pregnancy, which places pregnant women at a higher risk of contracting viruses and other illnesses. So, when most people are out and shopping for the holidays, it may be better to stay back. You can certainly find ways to virtually shop your favorite stores online.

How to reduce stress during the holidays

If going out to shop is not something you feel comfortable doing right now, then the two tips below can help you reduce stress during the holidays.

  • Plan and make a list

Write down the names of the people you want to give gifts to, the things you would like to gift them, and the things you need to purchase for the holidays. The list will make your shopping more efficient and less stressful if you want to shop in person. You also may be able to go during less busy times of the day and always try to limit your interactions as much as possible and of course wear a mask!

  • Shop online

The advent of technology has allowed us to shop in the comfort of our own homes. You can still get the same deals and discounts when shopping online, minus the stress of waiting in a long line and holiday rush (and possible exposure).
